Plant of the Month - Cover Crops
This may not be plant of the month, but more a selection of plants known as cover crops or green manure, including Phacelia. They are planted to replenish the soil from the season before. Cover crops are generally grains and legumes grown during autumn and winter and then cut down in spring, before they get too woody and go to seed. It is best to dig them back into the soil when the stems are still green and soft, this will add organic matter, building better soil structure and increasing fertility of the soil. Using them as a mulch will suppress weed growth and retain moisture. Over time as the cover crops break down, they will also add organic matter to the soil.
At Portstone Garden Centre, we stock Morton Smith-Dawe seeds which include Blue Lupin, mustard and grain mix. This is a great mix as the mustard helps with the prevention of wire worm and other harmful soil fungi. Blue lupin, being a legume will add nitrogen to the soil and the grains will provide organic matter. Blue Lupin also has deep roots, breaking down compacted soil. Ideal for crop rotation as they reduce the need for fertilisers and enhance soil quality for Spring planting and biodiversity. Phacelia, which can also be bought at Portstone through Kinds Seeds. It is one of the more attractive cover crops and is loved by bees. With its rapid growth, Phacelia aids in soil improvement and weed suppression. It has deep roots that will scavenge phosphate making it available for the following crop.
Sowing Phacelia in spring will attract beneficial insects, as well as looking pretty in the garden.
